Take Care of Pond Plants:
and they'll take care of the pond
Algae problems in ponds are usually the result of excess nutrients in the water. One simple way to control excess nutrients
is with aquatic plants. Plants take nitrates from the water, which deprives the algae of the nutrients it needs to live.
But dont forget to nourish your pond plants so that they can act as an effective biological filter in your pond. Potted plants
such as water lilies can benefit greatly from being regularly fertilized with tablets. TetraPond® LilyGro tablets can be inserted
into the planting media to fertilize the roots, leading to healthier plants and stronger blooms.

Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes)
Traditionally considered a pond plant, Water Lettuce is gaining popularity as an addition to aquariums. The plant acts as
a nutrient sump to extract excess nutrients from the water column. this is especially helpful when new aquariums are setup
before the submersed plants have a chance to fully adapt. The long feathery roots of the water lettuce immediately get to
work drawing the excess nutrients from the water column. Root hairs are much more efficient at nutrient uptake than submersed
leaves. As the plants multiply, the off spring can be easily removed from the aquarium as a measure of the nutrients removed.

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)

Water Hyacinth Flower
With broad, thick and glossy ovate leaves, water hyacinths may rise some 1 meter in height. The leaves are 10-20 cm across,
supported above the water surface by long, spongy and bulbous stalks. The feathery, freely hanging roots are purplish black.
An erect stalk supports a single spike of 8-15 conspicuously attractive flowers, mostly lavender to pinkish in color with
six petals. When not in bloom, water hyacinth may be mistaken for frog's-bit (Limnobium spongia).
One of the fastest growing plants known, water hyacinth reproduces primarily by way of runners or stolons, eventually forming
daughter plants. They may also reproduce via seeds. The common water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a vigorous grower
known to double its population in two weeks.

Anacharis - (Egeria densa)
Anacharis, also known as Brazilian Waterweed, is an ideal pond plant for beginners. Beautiful light to bright green fern-like
leaves, with branching stems covered in bunches of linear, whorled leaves help oxygenate and clarify the water and reduce
algae growth. The Anacharis anchors itself in the substrate by its roots, but will also grow when floating freely. The Anacharis
is an excellent for all types of ponds and is great for providing shade, cover and spawning material for pond fish. Propagate
by removing cuttings from mature, healthy plants. The Anacharis looks best when planted in groups. Can be placed in small
pots on the bottom of the pond. Can spread 12-24", so they usually need to be kept trimmed. They grow very well in ponds and
goldfish tanks and will survive in cold water. They are great beginner plants because they adapt very easily, grow quickly,
and are easily propagated. They are also good oxygenators.

Parrot's Feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum)
No pond is complete unless it contains Parrots feather. It will add oxygen to the water and help fight off algae growth by
consuming all of the excess nutrients. They also provide a spawning area for the fish and providing a hiding spot for baby
fry. The color is a nice silvery-gray in the shade, and a brilliant lime colored green in full sun. Parrots feather will
do very well in full sun or partial sun. Should it start looking straggly, pinch off the tip and throw the tip back in the
pond. It will winter over very nicely in a bowl or dish of water in
a sunny widow during the winter months. No soil is needed. Simply pinch off the tips and place in a bowl that contains a small
amount of water-soluble fertilizer.
